Questions or a file that will not open? Write to yaveez.dev@gmail.com. Please include your macOS version and the slicer that made the file.

Getting started

  1. Open SliceLook once after installing it. This tells macOS about its previews.
  2. In Finder, select a print file and press Space. You will see the model on its build plate, the layers, the print time and the filament.
  3. Finder icons for print files turn into pictures of the model on their own. Large icon sizes show them best.

Supported files

Print time, filament and layer details come from the notes your slicer writes into the file. If a file does not include the filament weight, SliceLook estimates it from the filament length and type and marks it as estimated.

Using the preview

Model

Drag to walk around the print, scroll or pinch to zoom, and double‑click to return to the starting view. The plate and the print stay still; you move around them.

Layers

Sliced files also have a Layers view. Drag the slider to go from the first layer to the last. The current layer is highlighted so you can check walls and infill before you print. You can turn the layers view around too.

A 3MF file that has not been sliced yet only has a model, so it opens without the Layers view. Open the file your slicer exports (G‑code or .gcode.3mf) to see the layers.

Troubleshooting

Previews or Finder icons do not appear

  1. Make sure you opened SliceLook at least once.
  2. Open System Settings and look for Quick Look extensions (under General, Login Items & Extensions on recent versions of macOS). Make sure SliceLook is turned on. The SliceLook window has a shortcut: Quick Look Settings.
  3. Relaunch Finder: hold Option, right‑click the Finder icon in the Dock, and choose Relaunch.

Some icons still show the old picture

macOS keeps thumbnails in a cache. Relaunching Finder, or waiting a moment, updates them.

"SliceLook couldn't open this file"

The file may still be exporting, may be damaged, or may use a format SliceLook does not read yet. Try exporting it again from your slicer. If it still fails, email us the file name and your slicer version.

My slicer no longer opens files when I double‑click them

SliceLook never makes itself the default app for print files. If a file opens in the wrong app, select it in Finder, choose File, Get Info, and set Open With back to your slicer.

Questions

Does SliceLook upload my files?
No. Everything happens on your Mac, and the app has no network access. See the privacy policy.
Is SliceLook a slicer?
No. It shows what your slicer made: the model, the layers and the print details. Keep using your slicer to slice and print.
What do I need?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
